Building Family Bonds

Marc Chabrier ©

Welcome to a brand new 365! A new year to continue on with previous goals and a new year to build new goals. During this next 365, I would like to continue strengthening my family. I wouldn’t say that it is a New Years’ resolution because it’s so much more. Additionally, I really don’t believe in the whole resolution thing. To me, I believe it’s important for you to not have a designated starting point. Just start!

For some things, it makes sense to have a starting point, such as journals or calendars. They start at the beginning of the year and it would just look silly to have written in it halfway through. For those of us with OCD, that makes sense, right?! Don’t sweat it, we don’t judge you guys!

So, back to our previously scheduled program. I have always loved the idea of family! The real F’n deal of family. A core, a tribe, a crew, a squad. A good family bond by blood is amazing, but these days not many of us have it as we did many moons ago. Many families move away to different parts of the world for whatever reason. Mine either have died off or are spread out throughout the world.

Back in the day, you could go down the street to your cousin’s house to ride skateboard all day and then all walk to your grandmother’s house for dinner. Those were the days! The wonderful memories of everyone having each other’s backs are pretty cool. Never had to worry about getting help when you needed it most.

Times have certainly changed and that’s ok too. We need to adapt and evolve. It’s time to build your own “family,” in whatever way that means to you. Not everyone that is blood is family and many can be family and have no shared blood. Who cares, right?! As long as your people are good to you and each other that’s what’s important.

Though we do need to understand that “family” is built over time and there will be ups and downs regardless of the whole blood thing. Nurturing and growing take time and we need to give it our all. Family is so important for our overall health and well-being I believe. You have to give it 100%, none of this portioned stuff. I hear many people in relationships say that it’s 50/50. That’s garbage!

You need to give 100% always! The reason many people say 50/50 is because they believe that the other will chip in the rest of the percentage. If you give wholeheartedly and expect nothing back you’ll feel much better. Yes, the whole point of this family thing is that everyone pitches in, but if you spend the whole time measuring what’s going into the pot you’ll lose the purpose of the whole family thing.

Not everyone at every time can give 100%. They may be on hard times and need the extra goodness their way. Now I know I just said that we need to give 100% always, but what if the person that needs help is you? Fine, stop being difficult, just give it everything you can. Smile! They will say you always give it your all anyway!

Conclusion

Build your crew of good people regardless of blood or no blood. Give it your all and help people along the way. It feels so good knowing that we are a part of a team and that we aren’t alone. You aren’t alone, you have us here at REL regardless. Yes, it’s a blog that’s in text print, but does it always have to be? No, who knows you can end up meeting another one of us somewhere down the line. There may just be another one of us right down the road! Let’s find out, shall we? The more you talk about REL the more chances of connecting with like-minded individuals.

Question

Give me some insight into your family?

My family is very small. It's just my parents and I but it works quite well for us. Each of us have our own unique personality however neither one of us clash. We accept the other person as they are.
